What is prostate?

Prostate is a glandular organ, which contains also muscle cells. It is only present in men.
It forms a part of the male reproductive system. Prostate secretes the so called prostatic fluid that nourishes and protects sperm in ejaculate. 

The prostate is surrounded by connective tissue containing many smooth muscle fibers. The smooth muscles help expel semen during ejaculation.

To function properly, the prostate needs optimal level of male hormones (androgens), which are responsible for male sex characteristics. Prostate is predominantly regulated by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a metabolite of testosterone
